Msgr. Luigi Giussani states: "[T.S. Eliot] asked himself "Has the Church failed mankind, or has mankind failed the Church?" . . . Both, both, because first and foremost it is mankind who failed the Church, because if I need something, I chase after it if it goes away. No one chased after it . . . The Church began to fail mankind, as I see it . . . because she forgot who Christ was, she did not rely on..., she was ashamed of Christ, of saying who Christ is."(Interview, 2004)
What does it mean to say, "if I need something, I chase after it if it goes away"? How does this relate to the "Universal Call to Holiness"? What do you think this quote implies for the everyday Catholic? What do you think it means to "say who Christ is" without shame?
As we reflect on life and identify the flaws that lie within us, human nature is brought into the picture. This is because our human nature forces us to do things that we simply just can't understand or fathom why we do them. In those terms, human nature leads us to want certain things we cant have. It also leads us to get tired of those things we once worked hard for and chased miles and miles after to receive them. When Giussani says "if I need something, I chase after it if it goes away." This quote touches on an action that many of us are not capable of completeing because we fail to understand what we need and what is necessary. This action requires a greater sense of what it means to truly know yourslef and the holiness around you. Ultimately all things whether they bring joy to your eyes or harmony to your ears cannot satisfy you and even if you start off chasing them you will eventually stop and loose interest. The only "something" that you truly need and you will be forced to chase for the rest of your life is God's love. God'd love is present everywhere. Even those who you believe you love with all your heart and you believe you need them in your life, whether you know it or not, you posses this emotion because God's love also is revealed in them.
This same belief transfers to the "Universal call to Holiness" because holiness calls us to live out fully the christian life. And this requires us to use our divine sense of humor so we can recognize all of God's grace that surrounds us 24/7. This is how we show our dedication to God. In this sense holiness allows us to use our free-will to make a decision that is just. The decision to surround ourselves with others who want understand this love and disentangle ourselves from those who look down upon those who are constantly striving to know God better. Universal call to holiness requires us to truly understand that we did not make ourselves, God did. Therefore the self in its simplest sense is a continuation of the father and because of this we must live out our lives as best as possible of how God intended us to. To say "who is christ" without shame is to understand that God is our father. You see God as your father and not as your master. But you realize that it is impossible to fathom all that God empowers. And even though this for some can make them lose interest, that mystery aspect of God intrigues and you understand that God's spirit dwells in us and that is enough to keep your interest and dedication to God.
